Bassa Mythology: Hilolombi, the Supreme God

Bassa Mythology: Hilolombi, the Supreme God

Since the beginning of time, the Bassa have always believed in a supreme deity: HILOLOMBI.

Hilolombi is the oldest name for God. At the same time, it is the least used, because it is sacred and unknown. In living memory, no Bassa has ever borne this name. Hilolombi means “the elder of elders”. A myth tells that long ago, at the beginning of the ages, Hilolombi lived among humans and gave them wise advice, helping them walk the path of justice, mutual respect and love.

Alas, humankind scorned his divine presence by resisting him, disobeying him and hardening its heart ever more! At the end of his patience, indignant and deeply disappointed, Hilolombi disappeared, so that no one knows exactly where he is. Deprived of divine protection, humankind was sorely tested and understood the limits of its insolence. Recognizing its weakness, it remembers Hilolombi, its once-scorned God, whom it now seeks everywhere.
