The Yadi-Feli: the suspended bed

In chapter 5, we saw Imana lying on a suspended bed at the home of the healer Kaboré. The name of this technological marvel of Kama is the Yadi-Feli (a word from KWENI* (Gouro). Yadi: to lie down and Feli: net).

NB: Kweni is a language spoken in Côte d’Ivoire

There are several models of Yadi-Feli, with the same basic features. A kind of hammock. They are floating beds, comfortable and ergonomic. Let’s look at the different functions together.

The functions of the Yadi-Feli

The extendable headboard — lets you adjust the bed according to how much space you want it to take up. This part also provides the oscillating movements and the desired rocking.

The console — all the magic of this bed lies in this module, which distributes the forces into the wall and the floor to maintain balance — whatever the stresses placed on the functional parts of the bed. We won’t say more about this compact marvel of technology…Not for now

The head-rest — made of small air chambers, this feature of the Yadi-Feli ensures comfort for the head. Its chambers can activate to massage certain parts of the head to encourage sleep. Openings also allow plant vapors to be diffused.

The Sèyi (mat in Kweni): made of bamboo foam and raffia, this part supports the body. It extends according to the height of the occupant. The Sèyi has the same massage functions as the head-rest (E). Micro-slits also make leaf baths possible: the leaf vapors then come in from below. The Sèyi also has side rails that can be activated to keep the sleeper from falling off the side.

The fan system — this ventilation system creates air currents from wave-like movements, which lets the occupant of the bed stay cool when it is hot.

So these are the basic features of the Yadi-Feli.
