Meet the Agni People of Côte d’Ivoire
Did you know that in Côte d’Ivoire there is a people for whom gold is not just a metal but a soul? Today, we dive into the world of the Agni, guardians of the Akan tradition!
It all begins in the 18th century. Fleeing wars in present-day Ghana, the Agni cross the border led by visionary chiefs. They settle in the Sanwi, the Indénié and the Moronou. They are the direct cousins of the Ashanti!
Among the Agni, structure is sacred. We speak of Kingdoms. The King is the guarantor of unity. And note: here, power is passed down through women — the system is matrilineal. It is the maternal uncle who passes on the torch!
The Agni believe in a creator God, but communicate with the ancestors through the Komians. The highlight? The Yam Festival! It is the Agni New Year. The sacred stools are purified, thanks are given for the harvest and above all… everyone eats! It is the moment when the culture shines at its brightest.
Proud to be Agni, or in love with Ivorian culture?
