But it would be more accurate to speak of African mythologies, in the plural: the continent is home to hundreds of peoples, and as many cosmologies, pantheons and founding stories.

What is African mythology?

African mythology refers to the body of stories, beliefs and sacred figures handed down by the peoples of Africa. Long carried by the oral tradition — by the griots and the elders —, it seeks to explain the origin of the world, the place of human beings, and the forces that govern life. It often has three levels: a supreme creator being, intermediary deities or spirits and the ancestors.

The great mythological traditions

Yoruba mythology

Rooted in the Yoruba region (southwestern Nigeria, Benin), it recognizes a supreme being, Olodumare, and many deities called orishas. Among them, Ogun (iron and war), Shango (thunder), Yemoja (the waters), Oshun (rivers) and Eshu (crossroads) hold an important place. This tradition spread far beyond Africa, especially in the Americas.

Akan mythology

Among the Akan peoples (Ghana, Côte d’Ivoire), there is a supreme sky god, Nyame, associated with an earth deity. Akan tales also gave us Anansi the spider. Several peoples of Côte d’Ivoire belong to this tradition — for example the Agni or the Abron.

Bantu traditions

Across Central, Southern and East Africa, Bantu peoples share common traits: belief in a creator, and great importance given to ancestors and to nature spirits.

And many more

The list is long: Dogon, Fulani and Bambara traditions, not to mention the legacy of ancient Egypt. Each African culture carries its own vision of the sacred.

Common themes

A supreme creator being, often distant.

Deities and spirits who intervene in daily life.

Ancestor worship, guardians of the community.

The forces of nature — rivers, forests, animals — charged with meaning.

Symbols — discover African symbols and their meaning.

Introducing children to African mythology

Told with care, it is a source of imagination and pride. That is the spirit of our books and comics and of the app KUMA.
